U Series

Mini excavators · 3 models

Kubota has led compact excavator sales in this class for two decades, and the U Series is where most contractors start. Built for access: zero tail swing on the smaller machines so you can dig flush against a wall, light enough to haul on a standard trailer, and small enough to clear a residential side gate. Backyards, fence lines, pools and tight neighborhoods. If you have been searching for a mini excavator for sale, this is where to look first.

Kubota U27 mini excavator

U27

The balanced pick. Still fits, digs deeper.

Nearly two more feet of dig depth than the U17 with enough weight to stay planted when you are pulling hard, and it still holds zero tail swing. The versatile middle of the lineup for crews running mixed work.

  • 2.7 Ton class
  • 9' 5" Dig depth
  • Zero Tail swing
  • Trailers Easily

2.7 ton class · 9' 5" dig depth · zero tail swing

Kubota U35 mini excavator

U35

Top of the U Series. Pulls through hardpan.

Where the work stops feeling residential. 7,924 lb of bucket breakout pulls through hardpan and old concrete instead of skating off it, with tight tail swing so it still works inside property lines.

  • 3.5 Ton class
  • 9' 9" Dig depth
  • Tight Tail swing
  • 7,924 lb Breakout

3.5 ton class · 9' 9" dig depth · 7,924 lb breakout

KX Series

Compact excavators · 3 models

The step up when the work gets heavier and the days get longer. More weight, more reach and more breakout force, with an angle blade on the larger models so backfill and cleanup happen in one pass. Built for footings, utility trenching, production digging and running breakers, augers and thumbs on auxiliary hydraulics. Same $0 down and 0% APR for 60 months to qualified commercial buyers.

Kubota KX033-4 compact excavator

KX033-4

Where compact meets commercial.

The natural step up from the U35 when you want more blade, more reach and a cab you can sit in for ten hours. Same ton class, a full foot more dig depth, and it trailers exactly the way the U35 does.

  • 3.5 Ton class
  • 10' 6" Dig depth
  • 8,138 lb Breakout
  • Cab or Canopy

3.5 ton class · 10' 6" dig depth · 8,138 lb breakout

Kubota KX057-5 compact excavator

KX057-5

Heavy production work, all day.

Utility trenching, footings and grading without stopping. Nearly thirteen feet of dig depth and 10,172 lb of breakout, which is the difference between a service line in one pass and fighting it all afternoon.

  • 5.5 Ton class
  • 12' 9" Dig depth
  • 10,172 lb Breakout
  • Angle Blade

Will it fit

Type in your gate width. We will tell you what clears it.

Measure the narrowest opening between the street and the dig, post to post. The checker adds an inch of clearance on each side, because a machine that fits on paper and scrapes the stucco is not a machine that fits.

    Excavator with attachments

    Every model comes attachment ready

Auxiliary hydraulics are not an upsell here, they are how these machines are configured and sold. What changes between models is how deep you can dig, how hard you can pull, and how much oil you can push to a breaker.

    One machine, the whole job

A hydraulic thumb turns the bucket into a grapple, so you are picking up rock, root balls and demo debris instead of chasing them around the site. A breaker handles old slab and footings. An auger sets fence posts and footings without a second crew. A compaction plate backfills the trench you just dug. All of it runs off the auxiliary circuit that is already on the machine.

Quick couplers let you swap between bucket sizes and attachments in a couple of minutes, which matters because an attachment you can change fast is an attachment you will actually use. Tell us what you own already and we will tell you what will run properly on which machine.

    ModelDig depthAux flowClass

Aux flow is what decides whether a breaker or mulching head runs at full speed or just runs. Match the attachment's rated flow to the machine, not the other way around.

    Three ways to buy

Mini, crossover or compact. Which one fits your work

The honest breakdown. Most residential contractors land on a U Series. Most crews doing footings and utilities end up on a KX. The middle is where people get it wrong in both directions.

    Kubota U Series mini excavator

    U17 & U27

    Mini · 1.7 to 2.7 ton
    • Clears a side gate. The U17 gets into backyards nothing else on this page reaches.
    • Zero tail swing. Dig flush against a wall or fence without repositioning.
    • Haul it yourself. Standard trailer, three quarter ton truck, no permit conversation.
Best for: residential, landscape, hardscape, pool access, drainage, tight neighborhoods and anyone tired of renting a machine every other week.
    See the 3 U Series models →
Kubota U35 and KX033-4 crossover excavators

    U35 & KX033-4

    The crossover · 3.5 ton
    • Same ton class, different priorities. The U35 keeps tail swing tight, the KX033-4 buys reach and comfort.
    • Real breakout force. Both pull through hardpan and old slab rather than skating off it.
    • Transport does not change. Same trailer either way, so the decision is about the work, not the truck.
Best for: general contractors running mixed work, footings, pool excavation and anyone who has outgrown a U27 but is not doing utility work yet.
    Compare the two →
    Kubota KX Series compact excavator

    KX040-4 & KX057-5

    Compact · 4.0 to 5.5 ton
    • 11 to 13 feet of dig depth. Service lines, footings and deep excavation in a single pass.
    • Angle blade. Backfill and cleanup happen while you are already moving.
    • Runs attachments hard. Breakers, augers and thumbs on auxiliary hydraulics all day.
Best for: utility contractors, commercial site prep, demolition and production digging where being undergunned costs more than the payment.
See the 3 KX models →

Cross-shopping a Bobcat E26 or E35, or a Cat 302.7 or 303.5? The U27 and U35 compete head to head with them on dig depth and breakout, and every Kubota on this page runs a Kubota built engine rather than a sourced one. One thing no other Kubota dealer can offer: we also sell Takeuchi. If you are torn between a U35 and a TB230, we will pull both onto the same lot and let you run them back to back.

    What customers say

4.9 stars across more than 1,000 Google reviews

    Who you are buying from

Family owned. Three generations. No corporate script.

"They walked me through every option instead of pushing the biggest machine on the lot. That is why I came back."

    Mark R., Fallbrook

"First machine I ever bought instead of rented. PDQ walked me through the sizes and talked me out of the bigger one because it would not have cleared the gates on half my jobs. The U27 has paid for itself in rental savings and I am back for a KX040-4 this fall."

    Questions we get every week

Straight answers to what contractors actually ask on the phone.

What is the difference between the U Series and KX Series Kubota excavators?
U Series are mini excavators from 1.7 to 3.5 ton class built for access. Zero or tight tail swing, light enough to haul on a standard trailer, and small enough for backyards, side yards and tight residential lots. KX Series are compact excavators from 3.5 to 5.5 ton class built for heavier sustained digging, with more dig depth, more breakout force and an angle blade on the larger models. If you dig deeper than ten feet or run a breaker all day, go KX. If you are between the two, look at the U35 and the KX033-4 side by side.
What size mini excavator do I need?
It comes down to access and how heavy the work is. The U17 is built for tight access and lighter jobs: backyards, fence lines, tight neighborhoods. The U27 is the balanced middle pick and where most contractors land. The U35 steps up for heavier commercial work. Measure your narrowest gate and tell us your typical dig depth, and we will size it with you before you buy rather than after.
Which Kubota excavator is best for a first time buyer?
The U17 is the most common starting point for residential contractors because it clears most side gates and hauls behind a three quarter ton. If your jobs are a mix of residential and light commercial, the U27 is the volume seller for a reason. If you are doing footings, utilities or production digging, start at the KX040-4 instead of buying twice.
What is the price range on a Kubota excavator?
It depends on the series. U Series mini excavators sit at the bottom of the range and the 5.5 ton KX057-5 at the top. Every excavator for sale on this page has its price and an estimated monthly payment listed on the model card above. What you actually pay depends on configuration, whether you add a thumb, breaker or extra buckets, current programs and your branch. Call and we will build the number for your exact setup rather than quoting a stripped machine that is not what you want.
Will it fit through a backyard gate?
The U17 retracts to 39 inches wide, which clears most residential side gates. The U27 is about 59 inches and the KX033-4 about 61 inches, so those need a double gate or a fence panel out. Use the gate checker above, or measure your narrowest opening and the slope going in, send us the number, and we will confirm which machine and configuration clears it before you buy. We would rather tell you no on the phone than deliver something that does not fit.
What truck and trailer do I need to haul one?
The U17 at roughly 3,700 pounds hauls behind a half ton or three quarter ton on a 7,000 pound trailer. The U27 and KX033-4, in the 5,700 to 7,600 pound range, want a three quarter ton or one ton on a 10,000 pound trailer. The U35 and KX040-4 at 8,500 to 9,700 pounds need a one ton and a 14,000 pound trailer. The KX057-5 at around 12,400 pounds needs a one ton dually or bigger and a 16,000 pound trailer, and the combination can approach the 26,001 pound CDL threshold. Every model's full specs above include a transport line, and we will check your truck's numbers with you.
Can I finance a Kubota excavator with no money down?
Yes. Zero down at zero percent APR for 60 months is available on new Kubota excavators through Kubota Credit Corporation for qualified commercial buyers, and most credit decisions come back within 24 to 48 hours. Most of our buyers finance through an LLC, S corp, sole proprietorship or DBA. Bring your entity name and we will structure it correctly.
    Should I rent or buy?
If you need a machine for one job, renting can make sense and we rent too. If you are running one regularly, buying usually wins. At zero down and zero percent, a monthly payment is often less than a couple of weeks of rental, and you build equity instead of burning it. We will run both numbers side by side with you.
Can I trade in my current equipment?
Absolutely. We take trades on Kubota, Takeuchi and other brands. Your trade value applies straight to the financed amount, which lowers your monthly payment.
    What attachments can I run?
Hydraulic thumbs, breakers, augers, compaction plates, grading and trenching buckets, and quick couplers to swap between them. What matters is the auxiliary hydraulic flow on the specific machine, so tell us what attachments you already own and we will tell you which models will run them properly rather than marginally.
Do you service what you sell?
Yes. All three branches have full service departments with Kubota certified technicians. We stock common maintenance parts, filters, pins, bushings and rubber tracks on site and handle warranty work in house. We have been servicing equipment in Southern California since 1952.
    Which models does PDQ carry?
U Series mini excavators: U17, U27, U35. KX Series compact excavators: KX033-4, KX040-4, KX057-5. We also carry track loaders, skid steers, compact tractors and a full range of attachments. Availability moves quickly, so call your branch to confirm what is on the ground.
